When I started my bookkeeping practice back in 2020, no one told me I was going to struggle with pricing, invoicing, and managing cash flow. “You have a marketable skill. Go sell your marketable skill.” Ha! Thankfully, I had some concepts from my teaching career I could draw on. I built systems and structures that could keep my business on track with minimal maintenance from me, giving myself the time and space to work through the mental and emotional pieces of my relationship with money. And as it turns out, my clients were struggling with the same things. As we started having conversations about why the structures that worked for me weren’t sustainable for them, it really started revealing how nuanced each of our relationships with money is. That’s when I became a Certified Money Coach, so I could serve my clients more effectively. As I continued to practice, and particularly as I worked with people of colour, I saw the impact of trauma on how we worked with money, and adjusted my practices and processes to work more sensitively with the pains and fears we hold. I’m a firm believer that we don’t have to unearth all our trauma to get where we want to go. That was me I started my bookkeeping business but the challenges of making offers, pricing, invoicing, and following up on money had never occurred to me until I was in charge of all of it. I never realized how I avoided money. I struggled with invoicing. I always wanted to do that little bit more work to justify my bill. And I hated following up on outstanding invoices. This didn’t serve me, or my clients. I had to make a change. I switched clients over to flat monthly rates, and I managed to price them well. I got them billed automatically, so I didn’t have to agonize over how much more I could do to justify my worth. And funnily enough, as I was working on this myself, I saw similar themes with my clients. 3 months is enough time to start creating some stability.
