I’m so excited to meet you.

I’m Brittany Tam,

Certified Money Coach (CMC)®, former bookkeeper, ex-Early Years teacher, woo enthusiast, and business owner.

My entrepreneurship journey started in 2019, where I started working with business owners from a bookkeeping perspective. I had the naive fantasy that my role was the key to financial clarity and informed decision-making. All business owners needed was help sorting through the numbers.

Turns out we have a more complex relationship with money than simple ‘data in, data out’.

Through the years, I noticed that I was serving two groups of clients. One group was getting their information to me on time, and they had a clear picture of their business and their cash flow. The other group wanted that story too, but the information I needed to complete the books would be slow to come in, and their financial statements were up-to-date only when needed for tax time. I knew the other group needed more from me.

And that’s where my previous life steps in.

For 10 years, I spent my life teaching. I was working with children from 3-year-old preschool to Grade 1, neurotypical and neurodivergent, to draw out their thinking. My driving force then was to help them make their thinking visible, and for them to create their own goals and craft plans towards them. And this is still my goal with people I work with today.

I have always been obsessed with clarity and being able to see how things connect. And this has served me well in a changing world, where rules expire and we’re nudged to adapt.

As I worked with my clients over the last 3 years, I realized that the second group of clients, that group who needed more, shifted when we took a different approach. When we started to dig into what was keeping them from opening their reports, sending in information about transactions, or creating spending plans, the awareness opened up opportunities for change.

As I was seeing this in my clients, it was prompting work in my own life. It was incredible to see the connections between my choices and beliefs that no longer serve me. When you get clear, you’re able to make life and business decisions that are in alignment with your bigger goals, and it feels friggin great.

My money journey begins…

…with an accountant for a mother and a father who worked HR at a bank. It’s almost as if working with money was in my DNA.

I remember my mom teaching me to reconcile my bank accounts, with a pencil, paper and the bank book. When I went off to university, she sent me off with a spreadsheet to create my first budget on excel.

I graduated from university, tried a few things, then started my life overseas. While there, I ended up graduating with my master’s degree, and then found jobs teaching in international schools overseas. This was the first time I really felt like I was ‘making good money’.

I was free of the worry about rent money, and I had money to spend on overseas travel. Life was easy. But I also got to witness first-hand the complex relationship people have with money in different contexts and cultures.

In China and Cambodia, I saw evidence of so many of my childhood narratives. Money corrupts people. Easy money makes people lazy. Lazy people end up poor. Don’t get me wrong though. Were those the only stories I saw? Hell no. But were those the ones that supported the fears my inner child had? Absolutely.

When I eventually burnt out of teaching (after all, “you have to work very hard to make money,” and “money is only worth it if you work for it”), I moved back to Canada and decided to apply everything I knew to helping business owners with their money.

And that is what led me to my deep dive into money stories and how they affect our present-day relationship with money.

I have some degrees:

  • Masters in Teaching (Early Years), University of Melbourne

I believe:

  • We all win when we lead from love and compassion

  • Perspective is powerful

  • Curiosity allows you to move through life with a little more brightness

  • Learning leads to empowerment, and empowerment allows you to make choices

  • Knowledge is important, but so is emotional awareness.

  • We are resourced, we are resourceful, and we can figure things out

  • The systems and structures in place right now might not serve us, but learning about them and how to work with them leads to empowerment

  • There is no such thing as ‘a numbers person’

  • Speak from the heart, and the right people will listen
